Turkey Hunts -2011

Merriam’s Turkeys rule the roost on this ranch. It’s literally over-run with birds and offers a tremendous hunting experience, especially for the bow hunting enthusiast.

The 2010 season dates will run April 11 - May 16 with a deadline of February 20th  for the first draw for shotgun only. Archery tags are unlimited and cost $85 and are good for one tom. The turkey hunting on this ranch is phenomenal and we can assure you that you'll get into turkeys every day of your hunt. Shotguns tags are limited and again are set up on a draw basis. The applications should be completed the same way it's done for the deer draw and that's to submit for each drawing if they have more than one. The unit is the same for turkey as it is for deer, Unit 45A in Lyman County. For ‘09 there were only (6) non-resident tags, but after the 1st drawing you can put in for the 3rd draw as they then combine all remaining tags and open them up to everyone. The code to use when applying for a shotgun tag is PST-45A-37 which is good for (2) turkeys and runs $100. Our focus is really archery hunts, but we will allow limited shotgun hunting as well.

Turkey archery tags are unlimited and must be ordered online well ahead of your hunt, or picked up in person at the South Dakota Fish & Game office in Pierre, SD. We had great success with bow the past two springs (check out the 2008 and 2009 hunt photos) and everyone that hunted either shot a bird or had many chances and just couldn't put it together. If the weather isn’t too severe this winter and the rains are within reason next spring, it should be another great year.

As with our deer hunts, all turkey hunts are self-guided, but there is the possibility one of us will be available at the ranch to help with your hunt. We will have a number of Double Bull blinds in place ahead of the season that will cover the main travel and roost areas. In addition we will have decoys available for your use. If you're willing to stick with it, you should be able to get your bird.

Merriam's Turkeys can be very tough to call and decoy, so they are one of the toughest birds you'll ever encounter.

Hunt Dates: April 10 - May 16, 2010
Hunt Cost: $525 per hunter for a 3-day hunt.

Tag Costs: Non-resident fees are $100 for Shotgun (2-tags) and $85 for archery (1-tag). Fees are based off of ’09 costs (these could increase for ’10).
